What To Do With Chicken Skin

You know those hard bumps that appear on the back of your arms, thighs and your bum? Harmless, but irritating, these goose bump-like plugs often resemble acne and appear as dry, rough patches of skin.

Formally called keratosis pilaris, but commonly known as chicken skin, it can even appear as a red rash on your cheeks. The real question is what causes this annoying condition?

That answer is easy, excess build up of keratin in the hair follicles.
What’s not known is why. If you have a family history of atopic dermatitis, you are more likely to develop it.

But what can you do about it? Intensive moisturizing is key, even as much as several times a day initially. Look for moisturizers that contain urea. These tend to be more effective.

Consider topical retinoids to encourage the skin to turn over more quickly. We can help you there. Don’t forget humidifiers to increase moisture in your house, too.

Chicken skin is considered harmless by the medical profession, but we know it can be hard on your self-esteem. So take these simple steps to minimize its appearance and get your confidence soaring!
